The Quest for Transgenic Spider
Before I embarked on this project, there were several arthropod species that I have encountered and tried to turn them into a model for my study. It began 16 years ago when I first came across a swallowtail butterfly, Papilio polytes on curry plant in the backyard at Kampung. The caterpillar really intrigued me with its majestic appearance not to mention the adult butterfly. But before that, of course during the undergrad years, my passion in GM insects has flourished. So, I have worked with that caterpillar quite some times for 2 years until something came up and wiped out the passion. Then again, in the early years of my career as an academician, I started out again finding a suitable model. From mealworm to supermealworm that I have played with, spiders have finally caught the eyes! I did document the quest in a journal but since it is too long to write on here, I just summarized it as written above.
