Genetically Engineered Silkworm expressing Spidroin Gene
This morning after Subuh prayer, I turned on the cellphone and scrolled over the news on X@twitter. Suddenly, I came across one article about GM silkworms expressing spidroin gene that made their yarn more tougher than kevlar. Indeed, the spidroin gene was edited using CRISPR tool and injected into the embryos of the silkworms. Once the gene was integrated in the chromosome, it allowed the silkworm to express the spidroin gene into the yarn and eventually contributed to the improved toughness of the fiber. Well, this was what that has motivated me to conduct this PhD study! I really wanted to do the same thing on spider since we do not have silkworm over here! Crossing fingers to this in this upcoming future! Till then, do take a look at the graphical abstract of the paper attached.
